Powerboat P1 USA to Join H1 Unlimited
The Air National Guard Hydroplane Series will be joined by the boat racing tour Powerboat P1 USA at four race venues this season, including H1 Unlimited’s season opener this July in Madison, Ind., H1 Unlimited Chairman Sam Cole announced Monday.
In addition to taking part in the Madison Regatta on July 1-3, P1 USA will race at the APBA Gold Cup in Detroit, July 8-10, and Bayfair in San Diego, September 16-18. H1 Unlimited is expected to join the P1 USA tour for a stop in Houston, Texas on September 2-4. It will be the first time Unlimited hydroplanes have raced on Clear Lake since the late 1980s.
“We welcome this opportunity to combine forces with P1 USA at several events here in the United States,” Cole said. “P1 is a fixture internationally and with H1 Unlimited’s growing international following thanks to the race in Doha, Qatar, we believe there are more opportunities to do combined events.”
“This is an important step for P1 USA,” said Martin Sanborn, P1 USA Managing Director. “The event schedule for our initial season had to be spectacular, and we can’t think of a better way to make a splash than to be involved with the pageantry and professionalism of the H1 Unlimited series. With their title sponsor for 2011, the Air National Guard, the events with the H1 series will be incredible.”
Cole and Sanborn met at the Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., in late April where they outlined the individual events in which P1 and H1 could combine forces for the 2011 season. The two series leaders initially met last year when P1 USA participated in the APBA Detroit Gold Cup event, hosted by the Detroit River Racing Association (DRRA) integrating events.
By participating at the same race venues, the tours will be able to enhance marketing efforts and share resources such as cranes, rescue boats and possibly television production. All seven H1 Unlimited races will be televised this year on the Versus Network and streamed live on www.h1unlimited.com. P1 USA will also be televising their events.
The P1 USA format will feature the SuperStock series, which is aimed at leveling the playing field in powerboat racing, and bringing back dynamic competition that has been missing for more than a decade. SuperStock is a “single-design” series where every boat will be nearly identical. The P1 SuperSport tag line: One Series, One Boat, One Engine, and One Champion, outlines the series philosophy. The odds are even, and the pilot is what makes the difference.
The SuperStock series runs on closed courses and also has a unique Match Racing format that will keep the fans and the teams engaged with close and intense competition. The courses will complement the H1 courses, at 2 to 3 miles, keeping the action close to the spectators.
P1 USA will also include two additional categories of mono-hull boats at selected events as part the P1 USA series. The classes feature the inboard V-bottom categories with the APBA designation SVS and Evolution, both single- and twin-engine configurations. This will provide a challenging series with tighter courses for the larger boats. Both tours race under the American Power Boat Association.
To assist P1 USA with racing in Madison, Midwest Tubes has stepped up provide sponsorship of the racing class.
“I know Midwest Tubes’ owner Rick Russell is looking forward to going to Madison, Indiana, and getting the opportunity to ride in a SuperStock boat,” Cole said. “On the weekend the boats can be a race boat and during the week used as a pleasure boat.”
Sanborn and Cole said the goal is to provide boat racing fans with quality entertainment on the water.
“We’re always open to partnerships that offer great racing for fans,” Cole said. “Fans in Madison, Detroit, Houston and San Diego will enjoy seeing H1 Unlimited and P1 USA.”
