Cal Phipps Joins Our Gang Racing
Our Gang Racing Team owner Nate Brown announced today that veteran boat racer Cal Phipps, Jr. of Sterling Heights, Michigan will join the team as back-up driver of the U-17 Miss Red Dot for the 2011 Air National Guard Series and will be the team’s primary driver for the 2011 Detroit APBA Gold Cup.
Brown explained that the expanded schedule for the 2011 racing season made the need for an additional driver necessary. The team’s regular driver, Kip Brown, will be saving vacation time during the Gold Cup and staying closer to home, driving the Peters & May 5 Liter at Black Lake the same weekend.
Brown shares the 5 Liter ride with U-5 driver Jeff Bernard and the two have the Peters & May team in contention for the national high point championship.
Brown said, “Cal will be a tremendous addition to our team in many ways. He is a great all-around boat racer and just a good guy to have around. He will be Kip’s radio man in Madison and we’ll put him in the boat for the Gold Cup in his home town.”
Phipps commented, “I am very excited to have the chance to work with Nate and Kip and the great team they have running the U-17 Miss Red Dot. The chance to drive one of the newer, faster boats in the sport and be part of the Gold Cup in my home town is an opportunity I really appreciate.”
Cal Phipps has driven and won in nearly all classes of inboard hydroplanes since he started racing in 1992. In addition to being the 2008 high points champion for the Grand National class, he has won 7 national championships and set world records in 2 different classes.
In his last race he won 1st place at the San Diego Bayfair “Thunderboat” driving the G10 Miss Titeflex-Frazee Paints owned by the Wiggins Hydroplane Racing Team. He took his first laps in a turbine powered unlimited in the seat of the U-13 at Tri-Cities, WA in 2008 and recorded his first timed lap in excess of 150 mph.
Phipps is a native of the Detroit area and is a custom automotive painting professional.
