Villwock and David Win Saturday Prelims
Blue skies and temperatures in the mid 80’s greeted a big Saturday crowd as racing got underway in the 2012 Albert Lee Cup at Seafair on Seattle’s Lake Washington.
The draw for Heats 1A and 1B separated Dave Villwock in the 1 Spirit of Qatar 96 and Steve David in the 6 Oh Boy! Oberto – the top two drivers in series high points. David was drawn into 1A with Villwock getting the tougher matchups as he drew the third, fourth and fifth qualifiers in 1B.
The first attempt to run 1A had to be stopped when Ryan Mallow lost power in the 99 Fox Plumbing Too during the milling period and was unable to get off the race course.
At the start, the other five boats were led across the line by Steve David and J Michael Kelly, both of whom narrowly avoided Mallow before the race was shut down. Jon Zimmerman, Brian Perkins and Mark Evans all returned to the pits along with David and Kelly.
Heat 1A was then scheduled for a restart following the running of Heat 1B.
After a brief delay, Heat 1B went onto the water. Villwock secured lane one with Jimmy Shane in the 5 Graham Trucking on his hip. Immediately after the start, officials radioed that the start was under review. Shane stayed with Villwock through the first lap and into the second but then the speed and lane advantage for the top qualifier prevailed.
Scott Liddycoat in the 88 Degree Men ran a strong race in third place with Greg Hopp in the 100 Fox Plumbing fourth, Nate Brown in the 17 Miss Red Dot fifth and JW Myers in the 11 Miss Peters and May sixth.
After further review, Brown was ruled to have jumped the start and dropped to sixth place.
At the restart of 1A, both J Michael Kelly in the 37 Miss Beacon Plumbing and Brian Perkins in the 21 Albert Lee Appliance were inside of David – but it didn’t matter. David powered the Oberto into the lead coming out of the first turn and never looked back.
There was great racing behind him as Kelly and Perkins battled for second. Perkins experienced a mechanical issue and dropped back and Jon Zimmerman in the 9 Seattle Sun Tan Presents Sound Propeller Services moved up to battle Kelly.
At the finish, Zimmerman nipped Kelly in a close finish for second. Mark Evans finished fourth in the 57 Miss DiJulio and Perkins finished sixth.
Racing resumes Sunday with Heat 2A slated for 10:30am PDT.
