Speedy laps in Friday testing
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Today’s test session at Guntersville, Alabama, showed that the fastest race boats in the world will be ready for action when the 112th running of the APBA Gold Cup gets underway tomorrow morning. The Gold Cup, the oldest trophy in American motorsports, will feature seven hydroplanes from the H1 Unlimited Racing Series.
Tomorrow’s activity at the Guntersville Lake Hydrofest will begin at 8 a.m. CDT with more testing. Racing will get underway with the first preliminary heat at 11:30 a.m. CDT on Saturday. The action can be watched live on the H1 Unlimited YouTube Channel.
The boats, which careen across the water at speeds that can reach 200 miles per hour, entertained the fans at Guntersville today with several high-speed test runs. The fastest was Jimmy Shane of San Antonio, Texas, who drove the defending national champion Miss HomeStreet at several laps averaging over 160 miles per hour. His fastest, timed at more than 164 miles per hour, exceeded the fastest ever recorded on the course, but doesn’t count as an official record.
Dave Villwock of Monroe, Washington, the sport’s all-time greatest champion, showed that he’s also ready for the Gold Cup when he turned a lap of almost 164 miles per hour in Miss Beacon Plumbing. Corey Peabody of Kent, Washington, drove Lynx Healthcare to test speeds approaching 160 miles per hour; Jeff Bernard, also of Kent, drove Goodman Real Estate at several laps of 159 miles per hour; and J. Michael Kelly of Bonney Lake, Washington, drove Miss Tri-Cities at over 150 miles per hour.
Also in the field are the Griggs presents Miss Ace Hardware out of Evansville, Indiana, a boat that is powered with a V-12 Allison engine that was used in World War II fighter planes, and the U-11 Unlimited Racing Group out of Cle Elum, Washington.
Tickets to the “Greatest Show on H-2-O” are still available for those who want to watch the action in person. For those who can’t attend, the race also will be streamed live on the H1 Unlimited YouTube Channel. You can find the link on this website.
