Shane wins San Diego’s Saturday Showdown

SAN DIEGO — Jimmy Shane drove the Miss HomeStreet to victory in today’s Saturday Showdown event in San Diego. The world’s fastest race boats will continue to compete on Mission Bay tomorrow during the HomeStreet Bank Bayfair race.

Shane, 36, of San Antonio, Texas, won today’s event after a close battle with two other hydroplanes during the final heat. It was his fourth race victory in this season’s H1 Unlimited Racing Series.

Finishing second in the day’s final heat was Jeff Bernard in Miss Goodman Real Estate, who was first across the starting line and finished only a few boat lengths behind Shane. Close behind Bernard in third place was J. Michael Kelly in Miss Tri-Cities.

Shane also clinched the 2022 national driver’s title earlier in the day with a victory in his first match race against Dustin Echols in Miss Beacon Plumbing. Shane’s Miss HomeStreet team also holds a lead in the running for the race team national title, which will be determined with the result of racing tomorrow.

Kelly also was a winner in the day’s match-race action, taking a narrow victory over Bernard. In the last-chance heat, Miss Beacon Plumbing lost a propeller blade immediately after crossing the starting line and went dead in the water. Bernard then easily outpaced Jamie Nilsen in Legend Yacht Transport.

Tomorrow’s racing will include two preliminary heats and a winner-take-all final that will end the 2022 season of the H1 Unlimited Racing Series. Tickets are still available at sandiegobayfair.org.
