Team RedDOT Will Miss Bayfair

Mike Jones, co-owner of the 9 Team RedDOT with wife Lori, has informed H1 that damage sustained during Friday qualifying for the 2013 Coeur d’Alene Diamond Cup will keep the team from making the trip to the season ender on San Diego’s Mission Bay September 13-15.
Driver Jon Zimmerman was just ¾ of a lap into his qualifying effort in the 9 Fox Plumbing presents Team RedDOT powered by Les Schwab when he told the crew he had a vibration and was shutting down. The vibration turned out to be serious, as the propeller had lost one of its three blades with the resulting vibration doing extensive damage to the hull.

Jones told us, “It destroyed the entire driveline – strut, shaft, gearbox, gear box mounts. Part of the gearbox was in the front of the motor. It’s more damage than we can fix in the few days before San Diego.”
“It was extremely frustrating and disappointing,” continued Jones. “Jeff and Mike Campbell and our entire crew had done such a great job with the boat all season and we had big plans for Coeur d’Alene and San Diego. We knew the big lake would be rough and we are good on rough water. We are also sorry to see Jon Zimmerman have to miss two races after doing such a great job of driving for us all season. Jon did a magnificent job all year and we couldn’t be happier with our driver.”

Jones was very complementary of the rescue effort that followed the incident, saying, “It was remarkable that they were able to get what was left of the boat back to the pit and on the crane as quickly as they did. I want to thank everyone involved for a great job that kept things from getting worse.”
Jones concluded by saying repairs will get underway this week and the team will be back on the circuit as soon as possible.
He also joined other H1 owners, drivers and officials in complementing Diamond Cup organizers and the city of Coeur d’Alene for the tremendous event and weekend they had all experienced.
“I think we were like a lot of people who had been driving or flying by Coeur d’Alene for years without taking the time to stop and see what a great area and city it is. It’s absolutely gorgeous and a beautiful venue for our sport,” he added. “The obstacles overcome by the organizers and our H1 setup people were considerable but they all did a great job. We are thrilled to hear that attendance was good and we look forward to being back in Coeur d’Alene in 2014.”
