Shane is fastest qualifier in San Diego
SAN DIEGO — Jimmy Shane drove the Miss HomeStreet to the fastest qualifying speed for this weekend’s H1 Unlimited event on Mission Bay in San Diego. The action on Mission Bay will continue tomorrow with a match-race showdown, followed by the HomeStreet Bank Bayfair race on Sunday.
Shane, 36, of San Antonio, Texas, circled the racecourse today at an average speed of 165.636 mph. His time was the fastest on the San Diego course since fuel restrictions were put in place more than 25 years ago. The second fastest qualifier was Jeff Bernard in Miss Goodman Real Estate with an average of 161.600 mph, followed by Dustin Echols in Miss Beacon Plumbing at 158.408 mph, J. Michael Kelly in Miss Tri-Cities at 154.048 mph, and Jamie Nilsen in Legend Yacht Transport at 150.592 mph.
As a result of today’s qualifying, tomorrow’s match-race showdown will begin with a one-on-one battle between Kelly and Nilsen, with Nilsen getting the inside lane. In the second match race, Shane will race against Echols, who will have the inside lane. The third match race will involve Bernard and the winner of the race between Kelly and Nilsen. The day will then continue with a last-chance heat and a winner-take-all final.
This weekend’s race is the final stop on the 2022 H1 Unlimited Racing Series. Tickets to the “Greatest Show on H-2-O” are still available at sandiegobayfair.org.
