After a dismal weekend at the season opener in Madison - failing to start a heat - Fred Leland, Jim Harvey and driver Greg Hopp came back strong in the Gold Cup with the U-100 Leland Unlimited.
Hopp qualified the boat with an eye-opening 157.73 for third spot on the qualifying ladder and followed that up with high a heat victory and a strong 4th overall, earning the team the Streamlight "Light It Up" award for producing one of the event's brightest moments.

As the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane fleet heads to the Pacific Northwest for the third
event of the 2010 racing season - The Lamb Weston Columbia Cup on the Columbia
River between Pasco and Kennewick, Washington July 23-25 - the race for
the season high point championship is tight enough that the event winner will
probably come away with the points lead as well.
Defending
national high point and Lamb Weston Columbia Cup Champion Steve David, driver
of the U-1 Oh boy! Oberto, will arrive in the Tri-Cities with a scant 198 point
lead in points but says, "I like our chances. I think Mike Hanson (crew
chief) has a good handle on our setup and we've made some changes in the boat
and gearing that should make us real fast. Then we go on to Seattle with
the rough water conditions and our boat should do very well there."

JW Myers will have surgery Wednesday July 21 to repair the
broken left foot he sustained when the U-37 Miss Peters & May lost a skid
fin in the Roostertail Turn at the Gold Cup and hit a wall at nearly 100
mph.
Myers told KNDU TV, "All I
could see was all the boats lined up for the next heat right in front of me like
a deck of cards. I was like, this isn't good. At that point,
that's when I just went full right rudder. I was just trying to figure out how
I could save this [hydroplane] and myself and the fans on the beach."
