Spring Boat Shop Tour – 9
In 2012, we welcome the popular Jones family of Mike, Lori and Casey back to the Air National Guard H1 Unlimited Series.
Jones racing will campaign a completely refurbished race boat on the entire circuit with Jon Zimmerman of Maple Valley, Washington driving.
A trip to the team’s shop takes you into rural King County, Southeast of Seattle, and into a wonderland of race boats of every size and shape.
Mike Jones, a former APBA president, at one time had driven every class of race boat sanctioned by that organization. There appears to be at least one example of every class in storage at Jones Racing along with an incredible collection of boats, vehicles and equipment.
Jones calls the collection the result of “60 years of collecting.”
In the center of it all there sits a gleaming new Unlimited Hydroplane which has been completely refurbished by team manager Jeff Campbell and crew.
The team’s primary race boat, winner of the 2001 Gold Cup with Mike Hansen driving, will join the circuit as a virtually new craft. A new cockpit and cowling will give it a different profile on the water. New wings, hardware, plumbing and other systems will make it as up-to-date as any boat in the sport. Hansen, now the Oh Boy! Oberto crew chief, has also been involved in the rebuild of the boat and motors.
Campbell is joined on the team by two other members of the former Miss Budweiser crew – brother Mike Campbell and Dave Arnold. They are joined by veteran crewmen Mike McIntosh, Rick Klontz, Harvey Chenault and Marlene Brooks on a team with many years of experience.
Campbell says they are doing things, “Very much like we did on the Bud. Keep everything clean and simple and maintain high standards everywhere.”
The team will start the season with a good inventory of three race-ready turbines and three gearboxes with a lot of new hardware on the boat.
The Jones family has tabbed Jon Zimmerman of nearby Maple Valley to do the driving in 2012. Zimmerman has seen considerable seat time in the Unlimited class after becoming one of the country’s premier owner/drivers in the 5 Liter ranks where he holds national records.
Mike Jones called Zimmerman, “A very good fit for our team. Obviously a very skilled boat racer who has a lot of boat construction and driving experience and the abilty to go the front when given the opportunity. We are glad to be able to give him his first full-time driving job and look forward to a great season with Jon.”
Zimmerman commented, “I am very optimistic about the season. Watching this team work and knowing the experience they all have I think it will be a great boat. And I’m really looking forward to being in one boat all year long!”
Zimmerman fits well with the team’s plan to be a quality operation and consistent finisher. The return of Jones Racing to the ANG H1 series makes a very welcome addition to the team roster for 2012.
