Dave Villwock, Jimmy Shane, Greg Hopp and Mark Evans all won preliminary heats on Saturday at the 2012 Detroit Yacht Club APBA Gold Cup.
Villwock and Shane each won both of their prelims and a flagrant fuel violation kept Evans from doubling up.
Disaster struck in heat 1C when Mike Webster in the 22 Great Scott! Presents Matrix Systems entered the Roostertail turn in a close battle with Hopp and Evans. Webster’s boat hit a roller and launched skyward, rotating 180 degrees and landing with a damaging impact.
Damage to the boat is severe, but Webster was well enough to return to the team and help with the salvage operation.
