Oberto Tops Detroit APBA Gold Cup Qualifying
To say things are tight atop the H1 Unlimited season high point standings and the qualifying ladder for the 2013 DYC Detroit APBA Gold Cup would be an understatement.
By outqualifying Jimmy Shane in the in the 5 Graham Trucking by .244 mph, Steve David in the 1 Oh Boy! Oberto erased 20 of the 23 points that separated him from Shane in the points race. When the Gold Cup heats get underway on Saturday, Shane’s lead will be just three points, the closest ever at this point in the season and an indication that the veteran and the youngster will continue their close battle throughout the season.
David’s round one speed of 161.730 was well ahead of Shane’s 156.828 but Shane took his black and red boat on the course as the second round was winding down and clocked a two lap average of 161.126. David’s team narrowly avoided having to send the Oberto back out to regain the top spot on the qualifying ladder.
Jon Zimmerman’s 155.933 in the 9 Team RedDOT gave him third place but Kip Brown lost his 4th place run in the 95 Spirit of Qatar to a tech violation.
