Steve David Retires – Then Tops Qualifying
Friday the 13th was a big day for Steve David. The driver of the 1 Oh Boy! Oberto started the day by telling the team that this weekend’s San Diego Bayfair would be the last race of his 44 year career. He has been the driver for the Madison, Indiana based unlimited hydroplane racing team since 2001.
Then the Lighthouse Point, Florida veteran went out and topped all qualifiers for Bayfair with a fast lap of 161.571 mph. Minutes earlier, Jimmy Shane had been atop the ladder with a 160.895 lap in the 5 Graham Trucking, forcing David to take the Oberto out onto the Mission Bay course one more time.
David’s fast lap dropped Shane into second place and added 20 points to his lead over Shane in series high points. The top qualifier earns 100 points with 80 going to second place. David will enter the weekend racing with his points lead at 63, a virtual tie in H1 Unlimited scoring.
Kip Brown picked up the 70 points for third place in the 95 Spirit of Qatar with a speed of 158.111. J.Michael Kelly put the 37 Miss Beacon Plumbing into fourth with a speed of 157.290.
It was a tough day for Mark Evans and his 57 FEDCO as the boat lost a propeller blade during a qualifying attempt and suffered damage to the transom area. The team reported the damage will mean they are finished for the weekend.
