At The Shop – Centurion Racing
For Jay Leckrone and Denise Garl, the start of the 2014 H1 Unlimited Racing Season is very relaxed compared the way their Centurion Racing Team started the 2013 campaign.
Just days before the start of the past season, they finalized the lease of Dave Bartush’s Detroit based boat. It barely had time to make the trip from Detroit to the Seattle shop and on to the season opener in Sacramento.
Things are much different in 2014. The team recently purchased the former 48 Snoqualmie Casino from GoFastTurnLeft Racing and have begun preparations to run the entire H1 circuit with over two months to spare. The team is based in Ken Muscatel’s shop in Burien, Washington, South of Seattle.
The hull is the Leland 96 B which Greg Hopp once drove as part of Team Leland. The veteran driver from Lake Stevens, Washington will be the Centurion team’s driver again in 2014.
The boat last appeared at the Seattle Seafair Race in 2013 where Rookie of the Year Jamie Nilsen drove it to a place in the Final Heat.
As in 2013, the boat will be Miss DiJulio with sponsorship from the companies owned by cousins Chris and Brian DiJulio. Chiris’s Lincoln Moving and Storage and Lincoln Logistics will share the signage with Brian’s Washington Asset Management.
Car Stars and Carpet Liquidators of Seattle are also already on board as associate sponsors.
Leckrone says the work to be done before leaving for Madison includes fitting the team’s motor and gear boxes into the hull, testing steering cables and other systems and making modifications to the cooling system.
The hull has a cracked frame and some deck cracks which will also be repaired. Leckrone says the boat is heavy and will run that way in 2014 before experiencing a weight loss program following the season.
The team will have two turbine engines and three gear boxes in the truck when they head East to start the season.
