Help The Hydromaniacs Help The Diamond Cup
An announcement from the Diamond Cup Hydromaniacs:
It goes without saying that the Hydromaniacs are crazy about hydroplanes, and that we want the Diamond Cup unlimited hydroplane races to be an annual event in Coeurd’Alene.
The Hydromaniacs are a non-profit group formed over 55 years ago to support the original Diamond Cup races on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Like the original group of merry men, the modern Hydromaniacs have made it their mission to help with the staging of the Diamond Cup and to assist such local charities and organizations as the Coeur d’Alene Food Bank, the Museum of North Idaho, and the Coeur d’Alene Senior Center.
Based on the size of the crowd, one would think that the 2013 Diamond Cup was a huge success. An estimated crowd of 50,000 enjoyed a family friendly, fun, and extremely safe weekend in the sun at Silver Beach. Unfortunately, many of those counted in the huge crowd on the water and at lakeside were there without paying for the privilege to do so
As a result of security breeches that have since been corrected, the Diamond Cup organizers fell short on revenue from the race and found themselves unable to pay many of the debts incurred by the first year event. Instead of folding their tents and quitting, the event leaders have worked to reduce the debt, to pay off creditors, and to push forward with the planning of a 2014 event.
Despite positive efforts by the Diamond Cup committee to “right the ship”, at least one local media outlet has taken every opportunity to take the Diamond Cup committee to task and to emphasize the negative. Not unexpectedly, the fund raising efforts of the group have suffered correspondingly. After one recent negative article, three potential event sponsors withdrew their support.
With that in mind, the Hydromaniacs have decided to step up and do their part to help bring back the hydros on Lake Coeur d’Alene for second straight year. To that end, the Hydromaniacs have decided to partner with the Diamond Cup Race LLC to help raise the remaining funds needed to put on the race and to appeal to the local community and everyone in the Inland Northwest region at large to do their part as well.
Under the plan just announced by the Hydromaniacs membership, a percentage of your tax-free donation to the Diamond Cup Race LLC (we are a non-profit after all) in the name of the Diamond Cup Hydromaniacs will go to help the local charities and civic organizations mentioned above.
The plan also provides for the majority of the funds to be raised to go towards helping to pay off the money owed to local businesses and individuals who helped facilitate the 2013 race, but have not as yet been paid. Those funds will also be used to help put on the 2014 race. Donations are encouraged in any amount. The important thing is to take part.
The race organizers and the Hydromaniacs are also encouraging businesses and individuals in Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, and the surrounding area to become event sponsors. Information on event sponsorship is available from the Diamond Cup Headquarters office. The Diamond Cup committee is accepting sponsorship money in any amount (and there are perks for signing on for one of the larger event packages). You can contact the Diamond Cup Headquarters about sponsorship opportunities by calling 208-691-1612
In return, the Diamond Cup committee is promising an even better 2014 race. Security has been improved and the event team has increased the number of boat classes participating to five, with three of them racing for national points. The organizers have also rearranged the event schedule to insure that the down time between racing events will be cut by more than half.
Please consider doing your part to make the 2014 Diamond Cup a reality. If you would like to donate, you can do so by check, cash, or money order to the Hydromaniacs at their headquarters at Kootenai Lawn and Garden, 1401 E. Best Ave., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho 83814. Donations should be made payable to the Hydromaniacs. Donations can also be made to the Diamond Cup Headquarters at 1105 Sherman, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho 83814.
The Hydromaniacs are also encouraging everyone to buy their tickets now rather than waiting for waiting for the event weekend. Various viewing packages including reserved log boom spaces are available at diamondcuprace.com, all TicketsWest outlets, the Angel Gallery at 5th and Sherman in Coeur d’Alene, all area Super 1 Foods outlets, and all branches of Inland Northwest Bank (INB). Boom packages can be purchased there also. (Fun Idea: The Hydromaniacs encourage employers to purchase race tickets and give them to their employees!!!).
Remember that when you make a donation to the Diamond Cup in the name of the Hydromaniacs, you are also helping out charitable groups and civic organizations making a major portion of the donation tax deductible!
Thank you for considering being a part of this very important project. Together we can help bring back the hydros for 2014!
