The Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame has announced champion hydroplane driver and Gold Cup race director Mark Weber will be inducted as a member of their class of 2014.
Mark Weber has won championships in virtually every class he raced, from 5 Liters to Unlimiteds, amassing 20 National and International championships in all.
“To say I am honored to be in such great company as I am with the other members of the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame would be an understatement,” Weber said.
The sport’s premier sanctioning body, the American Power Boat Association, has acknowledged Weber, with selection to the APBA Hall of Champions and Honor Squadron, the organization’s two highest honors.
As notable as those accomplishments are, what Weber has done for the sport of boat racing and the State of Michigan after hanging up his helmet are every bit as noteworthy.
Elected president of APBA by its members, Weber instituted programs promoting the sport’s growth through driving schools. In Michigan alone, there are now six APBA inboard and outboard race boat drivers’ schools scheduled for 2014.
“Mark Weber is a legend within the powerboat racing world, and the American Power Boat Association is thrilled to see him recognized. Weber achieved a great deal during his career as a top driver and is a member of APBA’s Hall of Champions,” said Mark Wheeler, President of the APBA. “Weber is also one of my most trusted advisers; his leadership within APBA continues to be outstanding. His place in the Hall of Fame is much deserved.”
His work as Event Director for the Detroit River Regatta Association has kept the nearly 100-year tradition of Gold Cup Unlimited hydroplane racing alive on the Detroit River in the face of significant challenges. For the eighth year, Weber will be at the helm of this year’s Detroit Gold Cup Races, which take place July 11-13. This is in addition to his role as a director for the 2014 APBA Inboard Nationals, which will bring hundreds of competitors to Pontiac Lake later this summer.
“Mark has been such an asset to the DRRA since he joined us nearly a decade ago,” said Tom Bertolini, President of the DRRA. “We can’t think of anyone who deserves this honor more.”
