Keith Crain Grand Marshal of Detroit HydroFest
DETROIT – June 27, 2016 – The board of directors and planning committee for the 2016 UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit HydroFest (August 26-28) are pleased to announce that Keith Crain, Chairman, Crain Communications, Inc., has been named the grand marshal of this year’s milestone anniversary race. The announcement was made by Detroit Riverfront Events Inc. President, Mark Weber.
Crain, recognized internationally for his contributions in both the automotive and publishing industries, is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Automotive News and Crain’s Detroit Business. One of his major accomplishments in his long career was the development of the Automotive News World Congress as an international forum for global business leaders to meet annually to discuss the most pressing issues facing the automotive industry. Crain also assisted in the development of the annual North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1989.
“This is a momentous year for not only our organization, celebrating Crain Communications’ 100th anniversary, but it’s also the 100th year of powerboat racing on the Detroit River. With both of these milestones happening this year, it’s truly an honor and pleasure to be chosen to represent this year’s HydroFest as grand marshall,” said Crain. “After all, Detroit is the motor capital of the world, and anyone who knows me, knows I have passion for speed and believe there is no such thing as too much horsepower.”
In his role of grand marshal, Crain will preside over pre and post race festivities, greet the drivers, sponsors and dignitaries along with other symbolic duties.
“As a distinguished and recognized leader in his industry and the City of Detroit, we are honored to have Keith serve as our grand marshal for this year’s UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit HydroFest,” said Weber.
The 2016 UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit HydroFest, which kicks off with “FREE Friday” on August 26 at 1 p.m. and continues on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, 2016, is the longest continuously running hydroplane race on the H1 Unlimited circuit. The first sanctioned hydroplane race took place on the Detroit River in 1916. Since 1946, a minimum of one unlimited hydroplane race has been contested each year on the Detroit River.
