Saturday kicks off hydro racing
Jimmy Shane and Andrew Tate picked up H1 Unlimited preliminary heat wins and Greg Hopp claimed victory in the Grand Prix World final heat of the MainSource Bank Madison Regatta on Saturday.
Shane, driving the hometown U-1 Miss HomeStreet Bank/Miss Madison, pulled away after a close three-lap duel with Tom Thompson in the U-11 J&D’s. Tate, aboard the U-9 Delta/Realtrac, then beat J.W. Myers and the U-27 Wiggins Racing.
Hopp finished second to Jamie Nilsen in a close Heat 1A in the Grand Prix event but came back to win the four-boat Saturday final aboard the GP-12 Dan Cole Sells Cars.
Hopp was hooked up in a duel with his father Jerry in the final for nearly three laps when Jerry’s boat experienced engine problems and went dead in the water. Greg Hopp then cruised to the win.
Early morning rain gave way to cloudy and warm conditions throughout the rest of the day with the sun poking through the haze wwby mid-afternoon. The good weather brought out a large Saturday crowd that packed the shoreline to watch the race.
A full day of racing is scheduled for Sunday starting with the first H1 heat at 11 a.m. and the GPW heats to follow. The H1 final is set for 3 p.m.
