H1 Unlimited visits Madison this weekend
MADISON, Ind. — Fresh from his victory in yesterday’s APBA Gold Cup, Corey Peabody and the other competitors in the H1 Unlimited Racing Series will come to the Ohio River at Madison, Indiana, this coming weekend for the annual Madison Regatta. Six of the fastest race boats in the world are expected for an event that will include testing on Friday, competition in a new match-race format on Saturday, and the running of the feature race on Sunday.
Peabody, 43, of Kent, Washington, will attempt to make it two race victories in a row when he pilots the Lynx Healthcare of the Strong Racing Team. He won the Gold Cup in Guntersville, Alabama, last weekend when two of the favorites were disqualified for infractions that happened before the final heat started.
One of those was Jimmy Shane, 36, of San Antonio, Texas, the driver of Miss HomeStreet, a boat that is based in Madison. Shane, who won last year’s Madison race to the delight of the hometown crowd, was a winner in each of his four preliminary heats at Guntersville and led the final heat from start to finish before learning that he was disqualified.
Another entry coming off a good performance at the Gold Cup is Dave Villwock, 68, of Monroe, Washington. The sport’s all-time greatest champion with 67 race victories and 10 national titles to his credit, Villwock piloted the Miss Beacon Plumbing to first place in three of his four preliminary heats before also getting disqualified from the final.
J. Michael Kelly, 43, of Bonney Lake, Washington, will come to Madison as the defending national driver’s champion and the winner of two of the four races held in 2021. He will again drive Miss Tri-Cities for the Strong Racing Team.
In the cockpit of the boat that Shane drove to a Gold Cup victory in Madison a year ago will be Jeff Bernard, 37, of Kent, Washington, who finished second last weekend driving Goodman Real Estate. Also racing in Madison will be Jamie Nilsen, 37, of Gig Harbor, Washington, who finished third last weekend while driving Miss Colleen.
Nothing compares to the unique visual beauty of watching a live H1 Unlimited hydroplane race. It’s a spectacular sight to see the huge three-ton hydroplanes skitter across the water at speeds approaching 200 mph while throwing spray high into the air. You can still get tickets to the event by going to madisonregatta.com.
If you can’t make it there in person, you can also watch the action live through the streaming broadcast on the H1 Unlimited YouTube Channel. You can find a link at H1Unlimited.com.
