Peabody Wins Two Heats – Lead National High Points

SEATTLE — Corey Peabody of Covington, Wash., continued his string of winning every heat he has finished this year by driving Beacon Plumbing to victory in both preliminary heats on Saturday during the HomeStreet Bank Cup and the APBA Gold Cup in Seattle. Peabody also earned enough points to move into the lead in the H1 Unllimited Racing Series national championship race with just one day left in the season.

Jamie Nilsen of Gig Harbor, Wash., the driver of Legend Yacht Transport presented by The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse, and J. Michael Kelly of Bonney Lake, Wash., the driver of Beacon Electric, were also winners in today’s preliminary-heat action.

The APBA (American Power Boat Association) Gold Cup is the most prestigious trophy in all of boat racing and, first run in 1904, it is the oldest trophy in American motorsports. The event was brought to Seattle this year with the efforts of Beacon Plumbing.

In the day’s first heat, Peabody took the lead at the start and lead the field to the finish. In the process he turned one lap at 149.269 mph, which is the fastest ever recorded for an APBA Gold Cup event held on a two-mile course. Nilsen also had a wire-to-wire victory in the day’s second contest. “It’s great to start out any weekend with 400 points,” Nilsen said.

In beginning the second round of preliminary heats at the HomeStreet Bank Cup and the APBA Gold Cup, Kelly had a deck-to-deck battle with Andrew Tate of Canton, Mich., the driver of Miss Goodman Real Estate. “We just had a barn burner of a heat with Andrew Tate and the win was much needed for our race team,” Kelly said. “It really worked out. It’s the Gold Cup and you’ve got to collect points and do what you can to make that final.”

In the day’s last heat, Peabody had a close race with Bobby King of Shelby Township, Mich., thte driver of Graham Trucking, and edged him out at the finish line. When it was over, however, and officials had a chance to review the data recorder from King’s boat, they found that he had dropped below the minimum speed to gain an advantage before the start, and he was disqualified.

“It was a happy day today,” Peabody said. “We got two wins in our favor, so we want to keep trucking along and get more points, get into that final, and really bring this home and get the national championship and the Gold Cup.”

Earlier in the day, qualifications for the race wrapped up with five of the nine boats in the pits exceeding the previous APBA Gold Cup record for qualifying on a two-mile course—a mark of over 148 mph that was set in Madison, Ind., by Jimmy Shane in 2019. The fastest qualifier was Andrew Tate and Miss Goodman Real Estate with a two-lap average of 154.462 mph.

After today’s action, Peabody has collected a total of 4,350 points during the season toward the national title, which will be decided tomorrow. J. Michael Kelly is in second place with 4,184 points and Jamie Nilsen is third with 3,569 points.

The competition for the HomeStreet Bank Cup and the APBA Gold Cup will continue tomorrow with the final two preliminary heats and the winner-take-all final. The racecourse is scheduled to open for testing at 8:55 a.m. PDT, the first set of preliminary heats is set for 11:10 a.m., and the final heat is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. Tickets to the event are still available at Seafair.org.
