Madison Weekend Recap: Tate Takes Indiana Governor’s Cup
Sunday Recap:
The Madison Regatta Indiana Governor’s Cup final heat saw a repeat from last week in Guntersville as Andrew Tate piloting the U-91 Miss Goodman Real Estate for hometown team, Miss Madison Racing took home his second consecutive main event victory. Tate had claimed two heat wins earlier in the afternoon to continue adding to his points total but was also able to showcase the strength of his H1 Unlimited hydroplane.
Tate lined up in the third lane for the final with the two Strong Racing boats lined up in lanes one and two. When the hydroplanes took the green flag, the U-1 of J. Michael Kelly and Tate in the U-91 battled side-by-side into the corners and fellow Strong Racing boat, the U-9 got out of the lane and lost position. Tate quickly showed the strength of his hydroplane and amassed a significant lead over Kelly to take the win in front of a large and excited hometown crowd.

Andrew Tate, U-91 Miss Goodman Real Estate, Miss Madison Racing:
How did you make the decision of when to push and when to be conservative on that final start against the Strong Racing boats to your inside?
“They tricked us and did something completely different during the climb, but props to them, they were exactly where they wanted to be. J. Michael Kelly drove a heck of a heat in that Strong Racing boat. I’m pretty pumped right now. Thank you to the town of Madison (Indiana) and everyone on the team. The list is endless and the equipment is awesome. This is a super-fast boat and I’m having a great time trying to put it out front. Goodman Real Estate, the town of Madison and this entire team, all the volunteers – there were tons of people here this weekend and I think it came off really well. I’m really looking forward to next year.”
While the win in Guntersville was sweet, how much sweeter is it to win in Madison?
“I’ve been coming here since I was a little kid and the parade and the fireworks, a lot of core childhood memories from here. The hometown people were just lining the beach and that was really, really cool. You don’t get to experience things like that anywhere else. I’m more happy for everyone here that hung out all day, listened to the bands and enjoyed the event. Thanks for everything.”
What does it mean overall to win at Madison with this being the hometown for this race team?
“I wouldn’t say that a win in Madison is ever easy, but it makes it easier when you have a great team, a great city and a great sponsor behind you. We started the Final heat in Madison where we wanted to in lane three, and got through the first turn clean. After that, it was get down the back straight and dictate the race course. I’d like to think that we saved the best race of the weekend for the Final – we’re happy!
How does this victory feel differently from last weekend at Guntersville?
“Winning in Madison is a completely different feeling…I’ve always enjoyed coming here for Regatta and the 4th of July Festival is super special for me and my family. To be the “good guy” in Madison is really cool and it doesn’t matter where you come from, I think everyone in Madison roots for the Miss Madison / Goodman Real Estate team here”.

We got good lane position and were able to squeeze our way in there and get out lane position and off we went into the first turn clean. Had some fast boats all around me, but just kept my foot in it and it worked out for the best.”
How will you carry the confidence, momentum and speed into the final heat and main event?
“Just stay mentally focused and stay out of the sun. I’ll get in the AC and prepare for the next heat. I know we’ll have some tough boats to run against, but its good to get these 400 points for Beacon Plumbing and we’ll look to do the same thing. This boat goes through the turns awesome and comes off the turns awesome and that’s where we won the race. Couldn’t be happier with Miss Madison Goodman Real Estate team.
