Steve David & Jimmy Shane Saturday Winners
The question leading into the Saturday prelims for Bayfair on San Diego’s Mission Bay was – would either Steve David or Jimmy Shane be able to gain series high points on the other by winning heat 1A or 1B. The answer was no.
The two H1 Unlimited drivers battling for the series high point lead were drawn into separate heats with Shane winning 1A and scoring the maximum 400 points while David did the same in 1B
Shane was not challenged for the inside lane before the start of 1A and drove the 5 Graham Trucking to a fairly easy win with Tom Thompson finishing second in the 11 Peters and May and Gregg Hopp third in the 14 Miss DiJulio.
David had a faster field to contend with in 1B, but maneuvered into the inside lane on the backstretch before the start and withstood a challenge from Kip Brown in the 95 Spirit of Qatar. Brown finished second as J. Michael Kelly in the 37 Miss Beacon Plumbing battled Mike Webster in the Big 5 Sporting goods for third. The two came to the checkered flag deck to deck and it was Webster who inched ahead to take third.
David will enter the Sunday heats with the same 63 point lead in the series standings that he had after qualifying. Racing will begin at noon with the championship final heat scheduled for 4:30pm PDT.
