Shane Tops Madison Qualifiers
Defending National High Point Champion Jimmy Shane put his new team at the top of the qualifying ladder for the 2014 Madison Regatta by posting a speed of 148.692 on his third lap in the first qualifying session.
Shane said his new ride, the 6 Oberto/Miss Madison is, “Exactly what I expected. It’s a rocket ship! A little looser than the boat I drove last year but it’s really fast and I love it.”
Shane added, “It has been really fun getting to know my new team mates and all the great people associated with the Oberto/Miss Madison. And the fans are something else! I’m really enjoying the whole experience and I think we are going to have a great season.”
Jon Zimmerman was second fastest at 146.520 in the Team Red Dot/Spirit of Qatar. J.Michael Kelly equaled that speed in the 1 Graham Trucking but lost the speed due to an N2 violation. Kelly qualifies for racing and is assigned a minimum speed of 130.
Third on the ladder was Tom Thompson in the 11 Peters & May at 143.067, followed by Kelly’s team mate Cal Phipps in the 7 Graham Trucking with a speed of 138.805.
Mike Webster’s 22 had engine problems and did not make a qualifying run. They will be allowed into the field upon posting a 130+ lap in Sunday testing, along with 12 Miss DiJulio, driven by Greg Hopp, which arrived in Madison too late for qualifying.
The Ohio River race course will be open for testing from 9am – 10am Sunday morning with Heat 1A scheduled for 11am. The Championship Final Heat for the Indiana Governor’s Cup is scheduled for 4:05pm Eastern Time.
