Nilsen and Peabody win preliminary heats in Madison

MADISON, Ind. — The fastest race boats in the world had a battle with Mother Nature today that ended with two of the scheduled three preliminary heats completed before the day was done. Jamie Nilsen of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Corey Peabody of Covington, Wash., were the winners of the two contests that were held.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused a long delay to the start of today’s Bob Hughes Memorial Madison Regatta, then debris on the racecourse caused the postponement of the day’s third scheduled heat until tomorrow. This weekend’s action on the Ohio River in Madison, Ind., is the second stop on the 2023 H1 Unlimited Racing Series circuit.

Nilsen, driving Legend Yacht Transport, grabbed the inside lane at the start of today’s first preliminary heat, crossed the starting line in first place, and held that position to the end, finishing with a comfortable lead over Dustin Echols of Monroe, Wash., in Bucket List Racing.

In the second heat, Peabody was behind Echols at the start, but had the advantage of an inside lane and drove his Beacon Plumbing into the lead coming out of the first turn. He remained in the lead to the finish line with his teammate on the Strong Racing Team, J. Michael Kelly of Bonney Lake, Wash., finishing second in Beacon Electric.

The racing action will continue tomorrow with three more preliminary heats, as well as the winner-take-all final heat. Tickets to the event can be purchased at madisonregatta.com.

If you can’t attend in person, you can also watch the race live on the H1 Unlimited YouTube Channel. Coverage is tentative scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. EDT. You can find the link at H1Unlimited.com.
