It’s Another Oberto Seafair Sunday
Steve David returned to his winning ways Sunday at the Air National Guard Series race in Seattle by holding off a strong challenge from a rookie driver to claim his second win of the season.
David pumped his fists in the air as his Oh Boy! Oberto hydroplane was being towed into the docks to celebrate his back-to-back victories in Seattle. Rookie driver Scott Liddycoat pressed David in the 5-lap final but didn’t have enough to catch the veteran driver.
“It’s not what happens to you but what you do after,” said David, who was involved in a crash at the season opener and had to sit out a race because of a rib injury. “This team has had its ups and down over the years but they’re always thinking, they’re always figuring out how to do better. So I never lost confidence.”
David was able to stop Villwock, who has been on a roll this season winning the last three races and becoming the sport’s all-time winningest driver. Villwock said the rescue escape hatch on the bottom of his hydroplane caved in partially and he had to slow down. He finished third.
“I made a decision with the door and everything else, I said ‘I think everybody else has 700 or 1,000 points and I have 1,525 points. I think I’ll take my points and go home,” said Villwock, who leads the national high points championship race.
Liddycoat collected his second second-place finish of the season and was happy with his performance. He took second in Detroit last month. Liddycoat was one of three Ted Porter-owned teams (Formulaboats.com Presents Todd Hoss and Graham Trucking) that made the finals Sunday.
“I’m really kind of speechless,” Liddycoat said. “When I was able to get beside (Dave), I thought Steve (David) was slowing down a bit and I was digging as hard as I could but it was a rough course. I’m happy with second.”
Villwock won two preliminary heats Sunday and David also won a heat. Brian Perkins in the hometown Albert Lee Appliance boat won the day’s only other heat. J. Michael Kelly won the provisional heat to make the final as a trailer and finished fourth overall.
The Air National Guard Hydroplane Series travels to San Diego, Calif., Sept. 16-18, for the Air National Guard Championships.
