Hydros A Hit With Seattle Area 5th Graders
110 Renton, Washington 5th graders got a preview of Seafair and a chance to meet U-11 Miss Peters & May driver JW Myers on Wednesday in a program at Maplewood Heights Elementary organized by Seafair’s Melissa Jurcan, a former student at the school.
The students saw the history of Seafair and hydroplane racing explained by the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum’s David Williams and enjoyed videos of past and present hydroplanes.
Myers told the enthusiastic gathering how he started racing in outboards at the age of eight and how exciting it is to drive the world’s fastest boats.
He then fielded several questions about how you control the boat and how it feels when things go wrong and the boat flips. Myers explained that he has some experience in that area and the students were very interested in his comments.
The fifth grade girls were very interested in hearing from Miss Seafair, Veronica Quintero. They wanted to know how soon they could apply and how much competition they would face.
Representing H1 Unlimited, Steve Montgomery talked about the tour the boats would be on in 2012 and explained how the races are organized and run.
Kelly McMeekin and Brian Deel, from Albert Lee Appliance, explained their company’s involvement as title sponsor of the August Seafair Race and gave every student a wooden model unlimited with a sheet of stickers they used to apply the graphics their boats.
With help from Myers and Williams, all the boats were properly decorated and the students left the assembly saying they would be rooting for JW and Miss Peters & May at Seafair.
Following the event, Jurcan said, “Had a blast this morning visiting my elementary school alma mater! I am so grateful to my 6th grade and gym teachers (who are both still there and as cool as ever) for making it possible for us to have a Seafair assembly there today. Mr. Yasui and Mr. G made a huge impact on my life and they are still making a difference in kids lives some 23 years later. Very proud to be a part of the team that presented today and I do hope to see more kids out there towing hydros behind their bikes this summer!”
Additional appearances at Seattle area schools as well as Boys & Girls Clubs and Ronald McDonald house are scheduled and will include Myers and U-21 Miss Albert Lee Appliance driver Brian Perkins.
