H1 Unlimited Fleet Set To Sail
The ten boats from the Air National Guard H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Series that are making the trip to the Persian Gulf for the 4th running of the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship in Doha, Qatar have arrived at the Port of Savannah, Georgia and are ready for the trip half way around the Earth.
David Holley, of H1’s shipping logistics partner Peters & May, reports that all has gone smoothly and the hydro fleet should be loaded aboard the Saudi Tabuk and underway as scheduled on November 3rd.
“In our fourth year of working with H1 on this venture, I am very pleased to say our people and the race teams have become very good at working together and what was once a major undertaking has become fairly routine,” said Holley.
Holly also reported that the crossing is expected to take until mid-December, which will put the fleet in Doha in plenty of time for the Oryx Cup January 10-12.
Plans are also being finalized to have the boats stay in Doha for a second race to be held February 9-12 with the final day of racing happening on Tuesday the 12th as part of Qatar’s National Sports Day.
The January Oryx Cup will be the final event of H1’s 2012 racing season and the February race will mark the start of the 2013 season and become the regular time for the annual event.
“We are very excited to be heading to Qatar to race for the 4th annual Oryx Cup and crown the 2012 UIM World Champion,” said H1 Unlimited chairman Sam Cole. “Then we will stay in Doha to start the 2013 season and crown the 2013 UIM World Champion. We are also honored that we have been asked to be part of Qatar’s National Sports Day, which is an important event for the country.”
Cole added, “As always, it is comforting to know that our sport’s assets are in the hands of a company as trustworthy and professional as our friends and shipping partners at Peters & May.”
